Submissions

InAct accepts submissions in the following categories:

• Research Articles
• Critical Essays 
• Reflective Papers
• Hybrid Media Contributions
• Practice Documentation

Recommended submission length: 20,000–40,000 characters, including spaces and references (approximately 3,000–6,000 words or 10–20 standard manuscript pages). 
 

Structure 

Manuscripts should include a title, abstract, keywords, main text, references, and any relevant supplementary materials. The structure of the main text may vary according to disciplinary and methodological approaches. Authors are encouraged to organise their manuscripts in a manner appropriate to their research while ensuring clarity, coherence, and research integrity. A typical submission may include an introduction; context and background and/or literature review; methodology and/or artistic process; analysis, findings, or artistic outcomes; discussion and reflection; conclusion; acknowledgements (where applicable); a declaration of interest statement; references; appendices (where applicable); tables with captions; figures; figure captions; and supplementary materials such as audio, video, scores, visual documentation, or datasets. 

Author Biography and Image 

Authors are requested to provide a short biographical note (50–150 words) including their institutional affiliation, research interests, and relevant artistic or scholarly activities. A recent high-resolution portrait photograph should also be submitted for publication on the journal website and/or in the published article.

Cover Letter 

A cover letter must accompany every submission. The cover letter should briefly explain the contribution of the submission, its relevance to the journal's aims and scope, and confirm that the work is original, has not been published previously, and is not under consideration by another publication. 
 

Submission Formats 

Manuscripts may be submitted through the journal platform using one of two methods: 1. Browser-based editor 

• Write and edit your article directly within the online platform. 
• Supports embedded images, audio, video, footnotes, citations, and LaTeX equations. 
• Recommended for authors submitting multimedia and artistic research materials. 

2. LaTeX submission 

• Upload a LaTeX manuscript prepared offline using tools such as Overleaf or LaTeX Workshop for VS Code. 
• Supports .bib bibliography files, custom macros, and complex mathematical notation. 
• Media files must be uploaded separately and linked according to the journal's LaTeX template requirements.

Length and Supplementary Materials

Submission Length A submission should not exceed 40,000 characters, including spaces and footnotes. 
Tables Tables should be clearly formatted and submitted as editable text rather than as images. 
Figures and Captions All figures and tables must include concise and descriptive captions. 
Artistic Research Materials Submissions may include supplementary artistic research materials such as scores, video recordings, audio files, visual documentation, and other relevant research outputs. These materials should be clearly labelled and accompanied by appropriate descriptions. 
 Written Component Artistic research submissions must include a written component of at least 10,000 characters, including spaces. 
 Format-Free Submission Authors may submit their paper in any scholarly format or layout through the journal platform. Figures should be of Recommended dimensions: 

• Full-width/Hero images: 1920x1080 px to 2500 px wide. 
• Content images: ~1200 px wide. 
• Logos/Icons: 300x300 px or smaller. 

There are no strict formatting requirements, but all manuscripts must contain the essential elements needed to evaluate a submission: abstract, author affiliation, figures, tables, audio and /or video materials, and references. Further details may be requested upon acceptance. 
Spelling can be US or UK English as long as usage is consistent. 
Note that, regardless of the file format of the original submission, an editable version of the article must be supplied at the revision stage. 
 Formatting, Citations and References Citation and references are managed by the online text editor or by the LaTeX template. We ask authors to use the citing and reference tool in the online editor or to follow the indications in the .tex template for LaTeX submissions.  

Using Third-Party MaterialYou must obtain the necessary permission to reuse third-party material in your article. The use of short extracts of text and some other types of material is usually permitted, on a limited basis, for the purposes of criticism and review without securing formal permission. If you wish to include any material in your paper for which you do not hold copyright, and which is not covered by this informal agreement, you will need to obtain written permission from the copyright owner prior to submission.
